The major of Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering (Municipal Engineering) of Huazhong University of Science and Technology has a history of more than 60 years in professional education and discipline construction. It is one of only 11 institutions that recruited undergraduates majoring in Water Supply and Drainage Engineering when college entrance examinations resumed in 1977. In 1992 and 2003, it obtained master's and doctoral programs in "Municipal Engineering" respectively.

   In 2007, it obtained post-doctoral research stations in environmental science and engineering and civil engineering respectively. In 2013, the major of Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering was selected into the national "Excellent Engineer Training Program". In 2019, it was selected as one of the first batch of national first-class majors. With strong professional strength, it ranks among the top five in professional rankings published by major institutions across the country.

   Through decades of professional construction and development, the major of Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering (Municipal Engineering) of Huazhong University of Science and Technology has established a complete professional training plan and discipline development system. A large number of outstanding graduates cultivated are distributed in various provinces/municipalities directly under the central government across the country, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, and Hubei, and have become senior specialized talents for national construction in various industries.

  There are currently 17 full-time teachers, including 8 professors, 7 associate professors, and 2 lecturers. All teachers hold doctorates and have overseas study/exchange experiences. In addition, more than 60 people including academicians of the National Academy of Engineering of the United States, and academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and industry leading experts, are hired as part-time professors or industry mentors to strengthen the cultivation of students' scientific and technological innovation and engineering practice abilities.

  Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the major of Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology is based on the location advantages of Hubei Province in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. It is actively exploring in aspects such as smart water affairs, high-quality drinking water, upgrading and reconstruction of sewage treatment plants, sponge city construction, and comprehensive improvement of water environment. It has become a sunrise major in the context of the era of ecological civilization construction.

   Curriculum settings: core professional courses such as Water Quality Engineering (I), Water Quality Engineering (II), Water Supply and Drainage Pipe Network System, Building Water Supply and Drainage System, Biology of Water Treatment, Water Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry for Water Supply and Drainage, Hydrology and Hydrogeology, Pumps and Pumping Stations, Intelligent Technology of Water Systems, Hydraulics, Engineering Drawing, etc. Practical teaching links such as experiments, curriculum design, cognitive internships (domestic + overseas), production internships, graduation internships, graduation projects, and innovation and entrepreneurship are also offered.
