The major of Building Environment and Energy Engineering major of Huazhong University of Science and Technology originated from the urban gas engineering major established in 1987 by the former Wuhan Urban Construction Institute and the building environment and equipment engineering major established in 1995 by the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The master's degree program and doctoral degree program were approved in 1999 and 2003 respectively. In 2007, the post-doctoral research station of the first-level discipline of civil engineering was approved. It has passed the professional education evaluation (certification) organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development four times in 2005, 2011, 2016 and 2021 respectively. In 2021, it was rated as a national first-class major (i.e., Double Ten Thousand Plan). It is one of about 10 universities in China that have the ability to cultivate talents at four levels of undergraduates, postgraduates, doctoral students and post-doctors in this discipline.
There are currently 15 full-time teachers, including 4 professors, 8 associate professors (associate researchers) and 3 lecturers including 6 provincial-level talents. More than 40 famous scholars and experts in this field are hired as part-time professors and tutors of this major to carry out joint teaching.
This major is oriented to national economic development and urban construction. Guided by people's needs for a better life and the national low-carbon strategic needs and guided by the new engineering disciplines, it cultivates compound senior talents with comprehensive engineering and technological capabilities across fields such as architecture, environment, energy, control, and artificial intelligence, and who can be competent for related work in the fields of human settlement environment control, intelligent buildings, building energy and urban gas supply. A total of more than 2,000 graduates in the HVAC and gas industries have been cultivated. A large number of alumni have become industry leaders, corporate executives, technical backbones, scientific and technological talents, etc., leading the development of the industry.
Curriculum setting: information courses such as electrical engineering and electronic technology, computer network technology and application, computer and programming foundation (C++), automatic control principle, BIM technology and application, building environment artificial intelligence technology, etc.; core courses such as heat transfer, engineering thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, building environment science, air conditioning engineering, heating engineering, ventilation engineering, building automation, principle and equipment of heat and mass transfer, gas transmission and distribution, etc. And practical teaching links such as course design, graduation design, cognitive internship, production internship, graduation internship, overseas internship (Singapore, Hong Kong, etc.) are offered.
