The major of Environmental Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology originated from the environmental sanitation engineering major established in 1985 by Wuhan Urban Construction Institute, filling a domestic gap. In 2000, the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology and the Department of Environmental Engineering of the former Wuhan Urban Construction Institute were merged to form the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The master's degree program in environmental science was approved at this year.
In 2006, the first-level discipline doctoral program in environmental science and engineering was approved. In 2007, the first-level discipline post-doctoral research station in environmental science and engineering was approved. In 2008, the first-level discipline of environmental science and engineering was rated as a key discipline in Hubei Province. In 2021, the professional doctoral degree program of "resources and environment" was approved. It has passed the engineering education certification of the Ministry of Education three times. In 2021, the environmental science and engineering majors were selected as the national first-class undergraduate major construction points of the "Double Ten Thousand Plan". Environmental science and ecology of Huazhong University of Science and Technology is a dominant discipline entering the top 1% globally in ESI. This discipline is developing rapidly through multidisciplinary integration forming a new environmental science and engineering system with comprehensive development of informatization and intellectualization. This discipline faces the major needs of the country's low-carbon development and ecological civilization construction.
There are currently 21 full-time teachers, including 10 professors (researchers), 8 associate professors (associate researchers), and 3 lecturers. It includes 1 specially appointed professor of the Changjiang Scholars Program, 5 national-level talents, 8 provincial-level talents. In addition, more than 20 well-known domestic and foreign experts including academicians of the American Academy of Engineering and academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering have been hired as part-time professors.
This major is oriented to the national ecological environment governance needs and cultivates students to comprehensively master the basic theories and basic skills in the fields of water, gas, solid waste and soil pollution prevention and control, environmental planning, evaluation, restoration, informatization and intelligent management in the field of environmental engineering. It aims to cultivate compound senior engineering technical and management talents with strong environmental engineering practice and innovation abilities and who can solve complex environmental engineering problems. Graduates can engage in work in aspects such as engineering design, construction, planning and evaluation, technology research and development, scientific research, teaching and management in the field of environmental engineering. By promoting environmental protection governance and improving the ecological environment, they make practical contributions to promoting sustainable development and ensuring people's health.
